Industrial Awareness Thursday - Blush Response: Desire Machines

This album came out around September I think, and when I initially heard the latest album "Desire Machines" from Blush Response I initially wasn't in to it (I thought it was quite a departure from their previous couple of albums)... but after repeated listens I'm really liking it! It is quite different from the first two albums but still has that industrial/fucked up electronics feel to it! And, I really like the cyberpunk themes! Can you dance to it... yes! Would I recommend this... Yes! Very inspiring stuff! Check it!!

Books: Assimilate by S. Alexander Reed

Well, just finished reading this! Excellent book! Here's what the blurb says on the back:

"Industrial" is a descriptor that fans and critics have applied to a remarkable variety of music: The oildrum pounding of Einsturzende Neubauten, the processed electronic groans of Throbbing Gristle, the drumloop clatter of Skinny Puppy, and the synthpop songcraft of VNV Nation, to name just a few. But the stylistic breadth and subcultural longevity of industrial music suggests that the common ground here might not be any one particular sound, but instead a network of ideologies. This book traces industrial music's attitudes and practices from their earliest articulations -- a hundred years ago -- through the genre's mid-1970s formation and it's development up to the present and beyond.

Taking cues from radical intellectuals like Antonin Artaud, William S. Burroughs, and Guy Debord, industrial musicians sought to dismantle deep cultural assumptions so thoroughly normalized by media, government, and religion as to seem invisible. More extreme than punk, industrial music revolted against the very ideas of order and reason: it sought to strip away the brainwashing that was identity itself. It aspired to provoke, bewilder, and roar with independence. Of course, whether the revolution succeeded is another question.

Assimilate is the first serious study published on industrial music. Through incisive discussions of musicians, audiences, marketers, cities, and songs, this book traces industrial values, methods, and goals across forty years of technological, political, and artistic change. A scholarly musicologist and a longtime industrial musician, S. Alexander Reed provides deep insight not only into the genre's history but also into it's ambiguous relationship with symbols of totalitarianism and evil. Voicing frank criticism and affection alike, this book reveals the challenging and sometimes inspiring ways that industrial music both responds to and shapes the world.

Assimilate is essential reading for anyone who has ever imagined limitless freedom, danced alone in the dark, or longed for more noise.

There you have it! I was inspired by this book. I hope you are too!!

Manga: BioMega by Tsutomu Nihei

Picked this up today! It's BioMega by Tsutomu Hihei. Well, it was a random pick. I saw it on the shelf, read the back, flipped through a couple of the pages and decided to get it! This was actually a very good read! The story/blurb on the back is this:

"A virus called the NS5 virus has swept across the earth, turning most of the population into zombie-like drones. Zoichi Kanoe, an agent of TOA Heavy Industry, is humanity's last hope, and he's not even human! With the help of Fuyu, a digitized intelligence built into the computer system of his heavy dual coil motorcycle, Zoichi's search for the key to salvation will take him on a journey across surreal landscapes and hurl him into battle against mind-bending evil. Prepare yourself for the ultimate trip - Prepare yourself for the world of BioMega."

"Zoichi Kanoe plunges into the depths of 9J0 - an island city in the middle of the pacific ocean - in search of Eon Green, a girl with the power to transmute the NS5 virus. He's not the only one looking for her, though... Agents of the Public Health Service's Compulsary Execution Unit are also in hot persuit. Zoichi and his transhuman allies have no time to waste; the countdown to the zombie apocalypse has begun!!"

This story is sci-fi/cyberpunk with horror/zombie themes. It was very good!! I'll be picking up the other ones as well!! It also looks like it's an ongoing series, so there'll be plenty of new issues to check out!! Anyway, Check it out!!

Terminus: Ignition

Well, this last weekend was Terminus, and holy fuck!!! Awesome!! There were a lot of awesome bands! Some of the highlights for me were:

Night one:
Alter Der Ruine: They played a lot of new material and it was good!

Tactical Sekt: I was actually surprised by Tactical Sekt, cause I've never heard much of their stuff and when they came on stage they put on a great fuckin show!!

[:S.I.T.D.:]: They've always put on great shows!

Night 2:
Photophore: I like them cause they have a unique style and they are a local band, they put on a great show as an opener!

IVardensphere: This time around IVardensphere did something a little different. It was just Scott Fox. He set up his rig in the middle of the dance floor and everyone was circling around him. For me it was cool cause being that I'm a musician I got to see what he was doing with his gear, and what he was playing was fucking awesome!!

Haujobb/DSTR: Unfortunately due to sickness In Strict Confidence was not able to make it, but Haujobb/DSTR [Daniel Myer] stepped up to the plate and took their place. Haujobb/DSTR as usual put on a really good performance. Daniel Myer likes getting the crowd involved and as usual it's always good times!

Night 3:
Comaduster: As usual Comaduster is fuckin amazing! Their music is very well crafted and they always put on an emotional performance.

Author & Punisher: Well, what is there to say, they were fucking amazing! The guy makes his own gear and the music is fuckin noisey and distorted! I'd have to say if you haven't seen A&P live they are a must see!!

Chrysalide: Well, this is one of the reasons I went to Terminus this year and they did not disappoint! Very fucking loud, very fucking aggressive!!

Covenant: Well, the last time I saw Covenant was when I was living in London, England (1999) and they were doing a Halloween show at some club there. I've always enjoyed Covenant and they have always put on good shows! Their show was amazing and they played stuff from their first album 'Dreams of A Cryotank'. It was fuckin awesome!

Honorable Mention:
3 Teeth: I'm putting this here because when I first heard 3 Teeth I was on the fence about them. I liked their music but to me it's a throwback to older 90's industrial. When I think of industrial I'm always looking for new stuff. Stuff that hasn't been done before. However, despite my feelings about their stuff, their performance was fucking excellent! Being that it was only their 2nd live show I think they did very well!!

Anyway, that's what I thought was good and what I enjoyed! What was yours?

Book: Micro Bionic: Radical Electronic Music & Sound Art in The 21st Century by Thomas Bey William Bailey

Well, finished reading this today! This book is packed with a lot of info about electronic music in the 21st century; including: Industrial, Noise, Glitch, Field Recordings... all kinds of shit. The blurb on the back is as follows:

"Micro Bionic is an exciting survey of electronic music and sound art from cultural critic and mixed-media artist Thomas Bey William Bailey, composed 2006-2008 and first published in late 2009 in both hardcover and paperback editions. This new edition includes all of the original supplements refused by the publishers of the first edition, including a full index, bibliography, additional notes / commentary and an updated discography.

As the title suggests, the unifying theme of the book is that of musicians and sound artists taking bold leaps forward in spite of (or sometimes because of) their financial, technological, and social restrictions. Some symptoms of this condition include the gigantic discography amassed by the one-man project Merzbow, the drama of silence enacted by onkyo and New Berlin Minimalism, the annihilating noise transmitted from the humble laptop computers of Russell Haswell and Peter Rehberg and much more besides. Although the journey begins in the Industrial 1980s, in order to trace how the innovations of that period have gained greater currency in the present, it surveys a wide array of artists breaking ground in the 21st century with radical attitudes and techniques. A healthy amount of global travel and concentrated listening have combined to make this a sophisticated yet accessible document, unafraid to explore both the transgressive extremes of this culture and the more deftly concealed interstices thereof.

Part historical document, part survival manual for the marginalized electronic musician, part sociological investigation, Micro Bionic is a number of different things, and as such will likely generate a variety of reactions from inspiration to offense. Numerous exclusive interviews with leading lights of the field were also conducted for this book: William Bennett (Whitehouse), Peter Christopherson (r.i.p., Throbbing Gristle / Coil), Peter Rehberg, John Duncan, Francisco López, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Bob Ostertag, Zbigniew Karkowski and many others weigh in with a diversity of thoughts and opinions that underscore the incredible diversity to be found within new electronic music itself."

Was a good read! If you are interested in all kinds of different electronic music I would recommend this!

Books: Zero History by William Gibson

Well, finished reading this. This is the third and last book in the Pattern Recognition series. All the main characters are here (Hollis, Garreth, Milgrim, Bigend, Oliver). This book is basically about how Hollis is asked by Bigend to find out about a fashion clothing line. The line though is very rare. Nobody knows who makes it, where they are from. There is no fashion show. The line uses non-marketing as marketing. There is an internal matter at Blue Ant; staff are leaving, crossing the line to the competition. There is all kinds of intelligence and counter-intelligence going on (bugs everywhere). There also is a rumor that Blue Ant is on to something big... nobody knows what but something big. If I have to sum anything up, this book nicely finishes up the Pattern Recognition series. It is good! And yep, I would recommend it!

Manga: Deadman Wonderland book 1

Well, picked up Deadman Wonderland manga the other day. It was recommended by the lady that was running the Comic Kazi store the day I was down there. It is interesting. The story is basically about a high school student (Ganta) who is framed for murdering his classmates by a "red man". He ends up sentenced to death and sent to an theme park/prison that resides in Tokyo after a great earthquake. It is called "Deadman Wonderland".

The inmates of the prison fight for survival every day to provide entertainment for the masses. Obviously, there are secrets that are kept from the general public about this prison. Anyway, there are some cyberpunk themes. And, I think I'll continue to read this cause it's pretty decent. Anyway, check this out if you haven't already!

Drinking, Drugs and Inspiration

Well, I thought I would tell you my feelings on this subject and maybe offer advice to anyone who uses or is considering using drinking/drugs as inspiration/a tool to write music.  Many years ago at an industrial club night that I was attending I got really drunk and of coarse had a good time. Afterwards, I had arrived at home I was inspired to write some music. So, I wrote a tune (just the music). At the time it sounded good! And I felt like I wrote something that I may use in the future on a potential release. A day or two after I went back and listened to it, it actually didn't sound all that bad! Being that it's years later I can't remember if I even used it on a release or not. Although, I find when I'm drunk I write decent stuff. However, over the years when trying to write lyrics (while drunk), my lyrics are shit. I've known some people that are inspired by doing drugs/alcohol. And yes some of the material is actually pretty good. Other times it can be shit too. I think one of the key things about writing is letting music/lyrics come out and flow and being in the right mind frame for it. So, if you don't have to use drugs/alcohol even better! I think too, in the end that you do not want to become dependent on it cause then there may be drug/alcohol addiction and that is not a good thing! If I were to offer advice on getting in the right mind frame without the use of drugs or alcohol I would suggest light some candles or have some sort of mood lighting, maybe meditate (not necessarily the same day), or do something that will put you in that mind frame. I also think setting a day aside during the week that is dedicated to writing will help things flow as well. Here's the two things people tend to forget when it comes to stuff like that is; Yes, drugs/alcohol can in some cases be very enlightening in the feeling/emotion spectrum but it can also distort as well! If you are going to use them then just keep that in mind and also keep in mind your health as well (mental and physical).  Anyway, just my thoughts on the subject!
